SUN CLASSIC CUT SHORT BY STORM; charities get 30K

The weather was perfect Saturday night as the Rotary Sun Classic Golf Tournament awarded $30,000 to two local charities, but foul weather played havoc with the second round of the golf tournament on Sunday.

Mary Colby, deputy director of the CASA Program of Chaves County, accepted a check for $20,000 in honor of Judge Alvin Jones, the program’s founder, who died earlier this year. In a second presentation the tournament awarded $10,000 to Community Kitchen with Bill Cooper and Brad Ussery accepting the check.

Sunday afternoon, with only two foursomes still on the course, final round play was suspended and eventually cancelled due to a severe storm that rolled across the golf course. As a result the Professional flight, Senior Professional flight and Championship Amateur flight relied solely on first round scores to determine the outcome of the tournament. All other flights used combined scores from both days of the two-day tournament.

In the professional flight Devin Miertchin of El Paso took home first place honors and a check for $3000 with a first day score of 64 followed by Justin Aragon of Las Vegas, NM, with a 65. David Muttit of Albuquerque, the defending champion, was third with a 66.

Brad Lardon of Santa Fe won the senior professional flight with a 67 followed by Mike Ciolek of Albuquerque and a three-way tie for third. Amateur Ritz Bhakta of Roswell won the championship flight with a 66 followed by Joseph Healy of Roswell with a 69. Alex Delgadillo of El Paso and Ted Waldrip of Arlington, TX, tied for third with a 73.

Thirty-two professionals and 74 amateurs competed in the tournament. In its 29-year history the Sun Classic tournament has raised almost $1 million for charitable causes in Chaves County.
